Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) is a not-for-profit public utility that delivers power throughout Long Island and the Rockaways. It was established in 1986 with the mission to enable clean, reliable, and affordable electric service to their customers.
LIPA approached Asponte to modernize their employee intranet experience. They wanted more than just a repository of documents, policies, and forms any employer might maintain. The client envisioned a sleek digital destination employees wanted to visit to find important updates, access their existing company documents, but also engage with their fellow employees. Asponte recognized that LIPA needed an improved visual design for their site and an interface content authors could easily update to keep their content fresh.
Asponte’s human-centered design approach helped posture the project toward a successful outcome from the start. We began the project with a review of the current site (LIPAnet) and discussions with the project sponsor to identify pain points and vision for the future. Next, Asponte reached out to LIPA employees to find out what they liked and disliked about the current intranet and what they would like to see in the future.
Asponte leaned into the personalization aspect by adding user-specified bookmarks to make sure the intranet is useful for each LIPA employee’s unique needs.
With the content editors in mind, Asponte wanted to make the authoring experience easy to use even for a new hire. Now LIPAnet 2.0 centers around a drag-and-drop authoring experience for new pages which provides both modular page designs and quick updates. LIPA’s content editors are now empowered by a variety of layout options and over 20 interchangeable drag-and-drop components that can be placed on any layout to make their site their own.
Every LIPA employee now also enjoys automatic login to LIPAnet thanks to our integration of Microsoft authentication on each workstation providing seamless access to their Sharepoint documents through LIPAnet.
The new site has been well received by the employees and improved overall engagement and organization with the team.
