Reimagining Corporate Communications for a Large Utility Provider

Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) is a not-for-profit public utility that delivers power throughout Long Island and the Rockaways. It was established in 1986 with the mission to enable clean, reliable, and affordable electric service to their customers.

Business Challenges

LIPA had a strong desire to modernize their employee intranet experience and make it a digital destination for engaging employees with the information and tools most relevant to them.

LIPA needed an improved visual design for the site along with an interface that content authors could understand and easily change to keep content fresh.

They wanted more than just a repository of documents, policies, and forms. They wanted a place employees wanted to visit to find important new information, access company documents, and engage with fellow employees.

Our Approach

Asponte began the project with a review of the current site (LIPAnet) and discussions with the project sponsor to identify pain points and vision for the future. Asponte also conducted a user survey of LIPA employees to find out what they liked and disliked about the current intranet and to ask what features they would find useful. This human-centered design approach helped posture the project toward a successful outcome from the start. Asponte also added some personalization like user-specified bookmarks to make sure the intranet is useful for every individual.

LIPAnet 2.0 is centered around a drag-and-drop authoring experience that allows for modular page design and easy updates. Along with getting the content end users wanted to see, Asponte prioritized making the authoring experience simple to use for LIPA content authors. New pages can be created quickly with a variety of layout options and over 20 drag-and-drop content components that can be placed on any layout to empower LIPA to make the site their own style.

LIPA are also users of Microsoft Sharepoint and Asponte was able to seamlessly integrate with the Microsoft authentication already present on each LIPA workstation to automatically log people in to LIPAnet and allow them easy access to documents in Sharepoint from the new intranet.

The new site has been well received by the employees and improved overall engagement and organization with the team.
